Amornrat Mahitthirook Chiang Mai International Airport has announced the cancellation of 15 flights and the re-timing of 36 others during next week's Loy Krathong festival when celebration lanterns are floated. According to an announcement by Chiang Mai's city hall, the release of lanterns is allowed during the Loy Krathong festival between next Monday and Tuesday. During last year's festival, 59 lanterns fell around the airport while 142 lanterns were collected in 2014 and 1,425 in 2013. Giant lanterns like these seen at last year's Loy Krathong festival at Surin fly high, and are considered a danger to aviation.
